Brand new hair salon, The Loft Hair Studio, has been all the buzz these past couple of weeks on social media. It’s easy to see why! Two very chic local stylists have created a beautiful oasis downtown in one of Kingston’s most coveted pieces of real estate, The Smith Robinson Building.
I am a true believer that if you do what you love, success will follow and it’s clear owners Liz Wing and Jade Poulter love what they do. Learn a little more about the local business owners in the q&a’s below.

Keep up with Kingston: How long have you been styling hair for?
Liz Wing: I graduated from St Lawrence hairstyling program in 2010.
KUWK: Describe your personal approach to hairstyling…
LW: My personal approach to hairstyling is to make each client feel special and to provide the best possible service that I am capable of without cutting any corners. I always think to myself “how would I want this done”. Getting your hair done is a huge investment and if I was the client I would want my stylist to give it their all every time. So that’s what I do.
LW: My favourite part of hairstyling is seeing how a new look can boost someone’s confidence so much. I love being able to help bring that out of people. It’s a really good feeling.
LW: Kingston is such an amazing little city and I am so proud to live here and now even more proud to own a business within it. Small business owners downtown in particular are so supportive of one another. I love being a part of this little community of amazing hard working people.
LW: I am so excited already about how things are going at The Loft, I cannot even begin to put it into words. We have new staff coming on board which we are thrilled about. The vibe is so fun! Our clients are absolutely loving it and that is the ultimate goal. To have a comfortable place for clients to come relax and to be a great place for stylists to work.
LW: My absolute favourite look is the balayage colour. That won’t come as a shock as my instagram account consists mainly of that. It’s such an easy-wear colour that anyone can have and requires much less upkeep then your typical highlights. If I could cut everyone’s hair into a bob I totally would. I am completely obsessed. There are so many variations that can be done to suit a certain face shape or hair type. Add that colour and that cut together and that’s hair heaven for me.

Keep up with Kingston: How long have you been styling hair for?
I have been doing hair for 12 years now.
My personal approach is to always give 100%. I believe you have to in a creative career, each person deserves the very best!
My favourite part is making people look and feel their best. It’s really amazing to see people feeling good about themselves. That will never get old for me.
Kingston has such a great downtown community and I am so pleased to be part of it now.
I am most excited to share what we have created at the loft. It’s such a beautiful relaxing environment where the client really does come first. We are keeping things simple here, a real one-on-one experience with your stylist.
KUWK: Anything you would like to add?
Opening The Loft has been a dream come true and it’s a magical thing to have a great business partner who shares the same passion.

One thing I’ve noticed since being back in town is how Kingston has grown out of the old “Florida of the North” stereotype. Sure, there are a lot of retired people who choose Kingston but there are also a ton of young people making their dreams come true – from business owners to writers and photographers. And perhaps I am a tad bias being a woman, but I am proud to see many of them are women!
